What is Direct Print and do I need to use it?

What is Direct Print?
Direct Print is a setting that bypasses the Windows print driver and prints directly to the printer attached to the computer. It cannot be used to print to any printer other than the one connected to the computer, so Direct Print does not work on any network printer.

Do I need to use Direct Print?
The Direct Print setting in Tracker is used for one purpose--to print forms that are longer than 11 ½" on a computer that is using Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Ask yourself these two questions:
  1. Am I using Windows 2000 or Windows XP on the computer I want to print?
  2. Do I print contracts longer than 11 ½"?
If you answered YES to both questions, you will need to use Direct Print for your forms that exceed 11½".

How do I setup Direct Print?
Once again, the Direct Print setting in Tracker is used for one purpose - to print forms that are longer than 11½" on a computer that is using Windows 2000 or Windows XP. The settings are for that computer ONLY, so if you don't print long contracts on a particular computer, then you do not need to use Direct Print.

To setup Direct Print:
  1. Click on the Sales pull-down menu > Add/Edit Sales.
  2. Click on the Forms button on the right.
  3. Click on the Adjust button at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Check the box at the bottom of the screen to turn on Direct Print.
  5. In the Printer box below, select the printer that matches your printer the closest. (Okidata 320 and IBM Proprinter are the most common choices)

Is there a disadvantage to using Direct Print?
For some, the only way to print long contracts is to use Direct Print. But, if you do not need to use Direct Print, it is advisable not to use it. There are a few disadvantages:
  1. Direct Print cannot be used with a USB printer.
  2. You cannot print receipts with Direct Print enabled.
  3. The printer must be directly connected to the computer.
  4. Forms will print differently and may need a slight adjustment.
